The background color is the water. The text color is the sky. Both are averages: mathematically derived from hundreds of photographs taken on and around Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn over three years. What you're looking at is a place, rendered as color.

Melville wrote in Moby Dick about the mast-head, about standing above everything and dissolving into the sea. Though he was writing about a location many miles from our mooring, he captured the spirit of every adventurer who heads out in the morning from the dock.

An homage to the work of Icelandic artist Birgir Andrésson, who believed that color could carry memory. Andrésson worked in Pantone. Pantone wasn't an option for us, so these colors were derived from photographs and rendered in CMYK—a different language for the same idea.

Professionally printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, natural wood frame, with non-reflecting glass. 18 × 20 inches (3/4" frame). Made on demand.
